The concept of this painting started some time ago. As it evolved, it took on more layers. Most important for me are the inner layers of the subjects. What is it they long for? Something within, between, or outside? The narrative became more complex as the painting went on...it moved beyond the suggestion of an interpersonal relationship. I truly believe images take on a life of their own and at some point the painting guides the artist as opposed to the inverse. Just as there are parts of the painting that I feel are still technically incomplete, so too are the narratives of the woman and man. I decided to leave this painting at this point, somewhat ambiguous with a quiet tension of opposites. Maybe it was no accident that at the time of “completion” of this painting, the world is in isolation, projecting out, searching to feel connected once again. I can’t help but think our path is to first connect within, then between, and then out into the world once again....hopefully in a more meaning way.
